Don't sit for too long...

Hall chairs were traditionally decorative and utilitarian chairs made in sets for large estates and sometimes personalized with initials and crests. They served as temporary seating as they are not very comfortable and the story goes that they were that made way to discourage the help from sitting too long. But mostly they're just for displaying against a wall and usually flanking something like a doorway.

A very personalized gift

This design was inspired by old personal bookplates and 18th century trade cards. The client gave me information on her husband's career and what she thought would be meaningful to him, but it was my job to bring it all together. The challenge was to compose all the seemingly unconnected things in a way that made sense with a narrative; so much so that the carving itself was the easy part.
